LaSonia Roberts-Melvin President
LaSonia has vast experience as a Patient Navigator with the National Cancer Institute (NCI).  She is also a Community Outreach Coordinator for Carolina Well, a UNC Lineberger Cancer Center Survivor Program, supported by the Lance Armstrong and V Foundations. She is a member of North Carolina Oncology Navigation Association since April 2008, a committee member of the North Carolina Advisory Committee on Cancer Coordination and Control and a member of the North Carolina Cancer Partnership. LaSonia's experience in navigating the healthcare system has propelled her to formulate a project dedicated to decreasing health disparities for cancer patients. She would like to extend her experiences to assisting patients with other medical conditions as well. Being a native of southeastern North Carolina allows LaSonia to have a firm understanding of the needs of cancer patients in the local community when they are faced with a debilitating medical condition.

Lisa Carlin Vice President / Event Director / Fundraiser
Lisa’s background includes experience in the financial, technology and convention/conference planning sectors. She has also worked within the health industry, working with Lower Cape Fear Hospice as an Accounts Receivable Specialist. Lisa has extensive personal experience assisting others with Patient Navigation efforts. She has many attributes she brings to the group, most notably her strong passion to help people.  Lisa's vast expertise with finance and organization within new and existing businesses is also a great asset.  To create and implement a network with this level of potential takes diligence and detail-oriented persistence. Her attention to detail is the very measure of her past success. Lisa's talents will be well used in the areas of initial start-up, fund-raising, expansion and sustainability. She is dedicated to this project and knows that the success of this venture will result in bringing necessary assistance to many people in need.

Nancy Foy Treasurer / Patient Navigation Director
Nancy Foy is a Patient Representative at Cape Fear Cancer Specialists (formerly Hanover Medical Specialists, PA) in Wilmington, North Carolina. Nancy’s healthcare roots go back to being a patient counselor at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She has been in the healthcare environment for more than 25 years with the last 12 being in cancer care. She is gifted with expertise in many areas including medical billing, paperwork and forms, state and local health organizations, resource research, pharmaceutical and drug knowledge, financial assistance and more. She is a member of the North Carolina Oncology Management Society and the North Carolina Oncology Association. Nancy believes that patient navigation must be her “calling” as she goes well beyond the call of duty when it comes to assisting patients. She cannot imagine doing anything else.

Ana White Secretary / Support Team Director / First Response
Ana is detail-oriented, curious by nature and blessed with a vivid imagination. She feels lucky doing what she loves to do, whether it's computer programming, organizing data, bringing ideas to reality or helping others. With more than fifteen years of database and programming experience, she sees her job as challenging and rewarding work. Ana's energy and drive to succeed are fulfilled when the job is done and done well. She is also bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish fluently. Ana graduated from Phillips Business School of Jersey City, New Jersey and earned a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. Currently she is a Nurse Aide Certificated while attending classes to become a Registered Nurse.  As a thirteen year breast cancer survivor, Ana embraces life everyday and grasps every opportunity to pass along a message of hope and love through her experience and knowledge.

Glenn Davis Nurse Navigator
Glenn is the Nurse Navigator for Health Connections Network, and our newest board member. His medical background includes over eight years in the Oncology field as well as time spent in various other medical specialties. Glenn grew up just outside Wilmington in a small community, and knows the importance of interpersonal relations. He graduated from Campbell University in 1994 with a BA in Religion/Philosophy, but eventually moved into the realm of healthcare after receiving his nursing education from Cape Fear Community College. Glenn’s desire to help those affected by cancer comes from a personal experience with the disease, having had two great-aunts pass away from lung cancer. He also has another great-aunt who is a colon cancer survivor. Glenn also sees his role as Nurse Navigator for HCN as one of a calling to serve those in his community, and not just a professional position.

Rachel W. Vaughn Circles Of Care Program Director
Rachel Vaughn is an experienced educator who has taught in New York and the Carolinas. She retired from E.A. Laney High School in Wilmington, in 2007. Rachel holds a B.A. in Business Education from St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina and a M.S. in Accounting from Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY).
Shortly after being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma - a form of cancer - in 2004, Rachel organized the RV Cancer Support Group which has a membership to date of sixty-one, representing ten forms of cancer: breast, ovarian, colon, stomach, prostate, lung, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, bone, Multiple Myeloma and uretha.
In 2011, Rachel became the New Hanover County Coordinator for Circles of Care. The program is an extension of Project Compassion, a non-profit organization based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina that provides innovative volunteer support teams for people living with serious illness, care giving, end of life and grief. A total of seventy-four community members have received the required training to become a volunteer.
In 2012, HCN and Project Compassion partnered to expand Circles of Care in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties, with Rachel as the Program Director.
